How to store your avocados for weekly shopping
We have put together some top tips on how to shop for Hass avocados a week in advance.by Haley
Our shopping habits have really changed in 2020, something we are all aware of! In our current circumstances, most of us have our fridge, freezers and pantries stocked up as full as they have ever been! People are not too motivated, or they are unable to visit the shops as frequently as before due to health concerns.
Try to mix up the ripeness of your avocados. Some firm, some soft. It helps to have a week’s meal plan/ guide in mind. If you buy all hard avocados, you can speed up ripening by:
1. Store your avocado at room temperature in the fruit bowl until it reaches the preferred ripeness for eating.
2. Store alongside with other ripe fruit such as an apple, banana or another ripe avocado. It’s the plant hormone ethylene, which occurs naturally in fruits like apples and bananas that triggers the ripening process.
To slow down the ripening process:
1. Once avocados have softened a little bit you can then put avocados in the fridge to help slow the ripening process down. You should get at least 3-4 extra days of storage this way.
2. Sprinkle a cut half of an avocado with lemon juice or vinegar to stop it browning, seal with cling wrap/ air tight container removing any air, and store in fridge.
You can adjust your avocado usage to its stage of ripeness:
If you are using a recipe that requires beautiful slices of avocados or creating an avocado rose, choose a firmer avocado.
If you are mashing it for dips, guacamole or toast, an avocado on the soft side is fine
